Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a type of brain injury caused by a lack of oxygen or blood flow to the baby. Many pregnancy complications can result in HIE, including factors in a high-risk pregnancy, labor and delivery issues, or medical negligence. 

Medical professionals may miss opportunities to prevent HIE or perform negligent actions that cause HIE. If medical professionals do not intervene in time, HIE can cause long term consequences to the baby.

Neonatal seizures, or seizures in infants, can be difficult to recognize in babies. Seizures involve involuntary jerking movements, which are caused by abnormal electrical patterns in the brain. Seizures can be caused by brain injuries like HIE. 

Seizures must be treated immediately, because seizures can cause or worsen brain injuries.

Cerebral palsy is a motor disorder, meaning it affects a child’s ability to move. Children with cerebral palsy may have trouble with muscle stiffness, limpness, difficulty feeding, or even seizures.

Sometimes, a baby must be delivered immediately via C-section. Several serious complications require emergency delivery, such as placental abruption, uterine rupture, or cord prolapse. If a baby is showing signs of fetal distress, medical staff must act quickly.

If a C-section is delayed by more than 30 minutes, a baby can suffer a brain injury from lack of oxygen.

Infants with birth injuries go to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for treatment. This special unit provides breathing assistance, premature birth care, and other supportive services. To treat conditions like HIE, providers use therapeutic hypothermia, also called neonatal cooling. Neonatal cooling can reduce the damage of a brain injury and help the infant recover. 

Not all hospitals have a NICU with equipment to provide therapeutic hypothermia. Level III or Level IV NICUs can provide this special care. If your child needs treatment for HIE, they may have to go to another facility after birth.
