United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) is a non-profit that serves those with disabilities. They have many affiliate groups across the U.S. and Canada.
UCP was founded in 1949 by parents of children with the motor disorder cerebral palsy. Over the years, UCP has raised awareness about the needs of individuals with cerebral palsy, as well as other intellectual and developmental disabilities and conditions. Through their affiliate network, UCP promotes the independence and productivity of people with a wide range of disabilities.
During the beginning of the 20th century, resources for people with disabilities were few and far between. General awareness of people with disabilities topped the list of growing concerns already facing them: poor living conditions, limited resources, inaccessibility, and minimal advocacy. UCP worked hard to flip the script.
UCP’s mission includes the following goals:
- Pursuing progress for people with disabilities
- Advancing the independence and productivity of people with disabilities
- Providing disability services to those in need
- Connecting those in need with support in their areas
- Offering online resource centers for parents and caregivers to communicate and share information
They do so by providing resources in the following areas:
- Therapy
- Assistive technology
- Early intervention
- Housing
- Advocacy
- Employment
- Recreation
- Community living
- Individual and family support
